I began building cigar box guitars in 2009. The first was a cigar box dulcimer (strummer) for my dad, who needed an instrument that was easy to learn and suited to nights in the mountains next to a campfire. Since then I have built ukuleles for librarians and teachers of folklore, diddly-bows and tenor banjos for music teachers and orchestra leaders, and even a tea box dulcimer for a 2 year old. Though the inspiration for each individual instrument varies, all of my instruments are built with the goal of encouraging people to create their own music: to “bain ceol as an saol” (Irish: reap music from life).
